Established in 1824 at the foot of the Grampian Mountains in an area renowned for illicit whisky production, the Distillery has a rich history. It was once destroyed by fire and later owned by the brother of a former UK Prime Minister (who alleviated the tax paid on whisky and passed a law allowing whisky to be sold in bottles). In 1966, the year of this cask, the Distillery’s days were looking up when two new stills were installed. Uniquely it has an ‘irrigator ring’ on the spirit still necks allowing only the purest and most complex vapours to ascend and be collected ready for filling to bespoke oak casks.
The first taste of this 45 year old gem rushed me away to the warmth of B ali which I experienced at the luxury Amana resort several years ago. Not so much the sea lapping at the white sand and more the culinary epicurean fusion of European flavours and heady exotic spices from Asia.
