Details

Miltonduff Distillery Built: 1824. Current Owner: Pernod Ricard. Production Capacity: 5,240,000 litres House style: Very floral, delicate, medium-bodied. The distillery was first licensed in 1824, and is situated 3 miles from Elgin close to Pluscarden Abbey. At one time the Benedictine monks of the Abbey are said to have made the finest ale in Scotland. The monks attributed the quality of their ale to the water of the Black Burn, which was blessed by a saintly abbot in the 15th century. This is the same water source as is used by Miltonduff distillery. The distillery added two Lomond stills in 1964 and produced a whiskey known as Mosstowie, which was heavier, oilier and smokier than Miltonduff. The stills were removed in 1981 and replaced them with copies of the Miltonduff stills. Mosstowie does occasionally become available through independent bottlers, and will surely be collectible in the future.
