Fettercain Distillery was founded in 1824, just after the 1823 Customs Act that slashed the excise on whisky production. The distillery was converted from an old corn mill into a distillery by the estate’s owner, Sir Alexander Ramsey. Fettercairn was rebuilt in 1887 after being destroyed in a fire. Fettercairn was mothballed sometime between 1926 and 1939. The distillery receives its water for production from sources in the Grampian Mountains. The distillery is now owned by White & Mackay Ltd.
