Caol Ila Distiller was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson on the northeastern shore of the Sound of Islay. It changed hands a few times until demolished in 1972 to make way for a larger edifice and production resumed in 1974 with a modern and updated distillery. It is named for the Sound of Islay by which shipments of barley and scotch whisky make their way... Caol Ila is the Gaelic name fo rthe Sound..
